Punjab

The state of Punjab was established on November 1st, 1966, following its reorganization, which led to the creation of Haryana and the Union Territory of Chandigarh. It is located in the northwestern part of India, sharing its borders with Jammu & Kashmir to the north, Himachal Pradesh to the northeast, Haryana to the south, Rajasthan to the southwest. With a geographical area of 50,362 square km and a population of approximately 2.77 crores (2011 Census),

Punjab is renowned as the "Granary of India" due to its significant contribution to the country’s agricultural output.

The economy of Punjab is primarily driven by agriculture, industry, and services. The state is one of the leading producers of wheat, rice, and dairy products in India. Besides agriculture, Punjab has a strong industrial base with manufacturing clusters in textiles, automotive components, and food processing. Major industrial hubs such as Ludhiana, Jalandhar, and Amritsar contribute to Punjab’s robust MSME sector, which plays a key role in employment generation and economic growth. The state is also witnessing growth in IT, logistics, and tourism sectors, further diversifying its economic landscape.

Punjab signed the Letter of Undertaking (LoU) with the Ministry of MSME, Government of India on 12th September 2022. It submitted its Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) on 31st October 2023 and RPC approved 13 projects worth Rs. 120.35 Cr for Punjab.

The key projects approved are as follows:

• Punjab MSME Digital Platform- One stop solution for a Complete MSME Database, Facilitation and Handholding, and Information Dissemination
• Development of a MSME wing at the Department of Industries and Commerce, Punjab
• Set up an Export Promotion and Facilitation Cell within Industries and Commerce Department
• Capacity Building of Select MSME units in Focus Sectors with an objective to enable scaling up of their Business
• Capacity Building of Officials of Department of Industries & Commerce on Focus Sectors, Subject Areas, Programs of various Line Ministries of Govt. of India
• Setting up of MSME & GEM facilitation centres across all districts targeting an aggressive information dissemination drive through Awareness workshops
• Encouraging Women-Owned Businesses in Punjab: Leveraging Technology, Market Participation, and financial Inclusion for SHG Growth
• Encouraging Green Manufacturing Practices in MSMEs by Making them Energy Efficient
• Augmenting Industrial Training infrastructure in Govt ITIs – Setting of a Training Studio to impart industrial training using Virtual Reality Technology
• Empowering MSMEs (focused on the Bicycle sector) by enabling them to produce quality products by linking them with Testing Lab, Quality Control Centers & R&D Centers
• Deployment of “Vyapar Sahayak” to aid and support to MSMEs across districts in Punjab in availing the various benefits extended by Central & State Governments
• Foster Institutional Capabilities and Strengthening Capacities of Government ITIs and Polytechnics in Punjab thereby creating pool of skilled resources for MSMEs
• Enabling environment and facilitation towards adopting Industry 4.0 in high potential sectors of Punjab such as Automobile, Agriculture implements, Machine tools & Hand Tools
