Lakshadweep

The Union Territory of Lakshadweep, India's smallest UT, consists of 36 coral atolls and reef islands spread across the Arabian Sea. It was formed as a separate Union Territory on 1st November 1956 after the States Reorganisation Act. Covering an area of 32 square kilometers, it has a population of approximately 64,473 (2011 Census). The UT is known for its stunning natural beauty, rich marine biodiversity, and unique cultural heritage.

Lakshadweep's economy is primarily driven by fishing, coconut cultivation, and tourism. The pristine beaches, coral reefs, and lagoons attract eco-tourists and marine researchers from around the world. The UT is also a key participant in sustainable fisheries and coconut-based industries, with coir production being a major livelihood source.

As part of its economic development initiatives, Lakshadweep has focused on eco-friendly tourism, marine resource conservation, and MSME promotion.

The administration has undertaken several initiatives, including:

  • Strengthening MSME sector – Support for local handicrafts, coir-based industries, and fish processing units.
