Puducherry

The Territory of Pondicherry merged with the Indian Union with effect from 01.11.1954 in accordance with the de-facto agreement between the Government of India and the government of France, which was signed on 21.10.1954. De-jure transfer of Pondicherry took place on 16th August, 1962. Thereafter the Union Territory of Pondicherry consisting of the regions of Pondicherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam has been administered under the provisions of Government of Union Territories Act, 1963. Puducherry is bounded on the East by the Bay of Bengal and on the remaining three sides by Tamil Nadu. The UT comprises Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam, wherein Karaikal lies about 130 km south of Puducherry on the East Coast and Mahe is situated on the Malabar Coast on the Western Ghats surrounded by Kerala. Yanam is situated adjoining the East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. The coastline is 45 kms, with 26 landing centres and 1,000 sq. km. of continental shelves (with potential marine fisheries)

The UT has a strong presence in the tourism, agriculture, and marine product sectors. It is an attractive tourist destination with beaches and French architecture. In 2022 Puducherry witnessed arrivals of 17.6 lakh domestic tourists and 900 foreign tourists.

U.T of Puducherry signed the Letter of Undertaking (LoU) with Ministry of MSME, Government of India on 15.09.2023 and submitted its Strategic Investment Plan (SIP) on 19.07.2024. Government of India approved 11 Projects worth of Rs. 31.98 Cr for U.T of Puducherry.

The Key Projects approved are as follows:

  • Enabling Assess to Market (VDP/Buyer, Seller market- Brand Identity and Logo Design, Collaboration with Brand Ambassadors, Digital Marketing Campaign, Product Labeling Packaging & Promotion, VDP/ RBSM, B2B Conclave, Acceleration Programme to other parts of the country, Diagnostic study on as–is status of vendor development programme for thrust sectors which are- plastic, fisheries, pharma, textile and leather products etc.
  • Enabling E-Commerce- e-Commerce On boarding of MSMEs on specific e-Commerce portals ( sarvana stores etc e.g. ONDC, GeM, Amazon, Flipkart, local portal)
  • Institutional Strengthening and capacity Building- Reimbursement of various application and documentation costs for 1000 MSMEs to alleviate financial burdens, Conduct of a comprehensive updation exercise through an intensive interaction with MSMEs
  • Capacity Building of MSME’s- Comprehensive skill upgrading program.
  • Capacity building of Government partners- Capacity building initiatives for Government officials.
  • MSME Facilitation center- Partial reimbursement for reports and analysis recommended by MSME Clients through the MSME helpdesk, Engagement of specializes resources for MSME Facilitation Center.
  • Awareness Creation Workshop- Customized training programmes on green technology, MSME sensitization workshop, export related training, financial literacy workshop, training workshop on CGTMSE Scheme, Train the Trainers for officers on champions.
  • Greening & Sustainability- Reimbursement/ incentivization of cost of Energy Audits, Reimbursement/ incentivization of cost of Water Audits, Develop green intensive and energy efficient case studies, documentaries of successes stories through reputed research organization and media, Incentivize application and process cost for obtaining sustainability and quality creation like ISO, Fair Trade and Green Globe.
  • Innovative Projects (Fisheries)- Value chain of the fisheries industry, with focus on training to venture into deep sea fishing, incentive latest of equipments, exposure visits to well-equipped institutes and marine processing.
  • Immersive beach and culinary initiatives- Development of beach activities, Recruitment of lifeguard, Technology transfer from successful beach management practices at other locations, Annual multi-sport event, Food festival to promote inter-cultural exchange.

  • Enhancing Digital Marketing- Creation of an Umbrella portal under the Department of Industries.
